Grief Point: A Dance Work by Sidra Bell

October 20, 2011

While browsing around the website for PeriDance I came across the video for Grief Point, it is work of profound respect that was created by Sidra Bell. As you watch the video you will have a haunting sense of quiet. I felt a need not to breathe to loudly nor move at all for fear of disrupting Moo Kim’s movement. Mr.Kim’s movement is both fluid and saccadic, a blend of energies that seeks an expression of yearning. The accompanying soundtrack is a haunting score with spoken word. Reference to May 1st and struggles both physically and inward as well.

Grief Point was premiered in Stuttgart, Germany and won first place for choreography at the 15th Annual Internationales Solo-Tanz-Theater Festival. Moo Kim’s dancing was awarded First Prize for Performance, which was well owned as you will see.The solo will tour Germany in November 2011 and have its South American debut in Brazil in April.

Sidra Bell is Artistic Director and choreographer for Sidra Bell Dance New York. She is currently an Adjunct Professor at Barnard College (Columbia University) and has a BA in History from Yale University and an MFA in Choreography from Purchase College Conservatory of Dance. She received her formative dance training at The Dance Theater of Harlem and The Ailey School as a full scholarship recipient.

The company’s next New York performances are December 3, 2011 at Red Beans Studios, 240 West 37th Street, By Invitation Only. Also January 6-7, 2012 at 8 PM, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Reverb APAP, East 25th Street between Lexington and 3rd Avenue.
