In the Middle Somewhat Elevated with Sylvie Guillem & Laurent Hilaire. Choreography by William Forsythe

September 7, 2012

In the Middle Somewhat Elevated was created in 1987 for Sylvie Guillem and other stars of the Paris Opera Ballet”

”In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated” is a title that refers to the relationship of his own ballet to a piece by Karole Armitage on the same bill at the Paris Opera last year (1987). The Armitage backcloths by David Salle were in the middle, somewhat elevated. Anna Kisselgoff 1988

“In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated” is Mr. Forsythe at his fierce finest…this is an abstract, muscular piece, with banging, grunting music by Thom Willems. Dancers walk out, burst into movement and then suddenly quit, striding offstage. The ballet begins that way and ends that way; nearly all the interest lies in the dancing and the dancers more than in any perceivable structure. The New York Times, 2005
