Sylvie Guillem: Two (Rise and Fall) Choreographed by Russell Maliphant….
Two (Rise and Fall)
Dancer: Sylvie Guillem
Choreography: Russell Maliphant
Lighting; Michael Hulls
Music: Andy Cowton
“Two” was originally made in 2001, as part of the Dance Umbrella Festival, for Russell Maliphant’s wife – the former Royal Ballet dance, Dana Fouras. Here is has been reworked for Sylvie Guillem as the tenth birthday present for the Maliphant/Hulls team. The dancer is held within a small rectangular box, surrounded by a larger rectangle of light, and for twelve minutes the intense relationship of her movement and Andy Cowton’s music is all-consuming. Hands and feet flash into the rectangle momentarily as Guillem plays with the light. It might look like child’s play, but timing is everything as the dancer must concentrate to hit each climatic moment where movement, light and music collide. Guillem made an extraordinarily performance seem almost effortless….
