Legendary dancer, choreographer, critic and actor Gus Solomons Jr. stars in the latest edition of the viral video series #ShareTheMattress, which features creative artists dancing, playing and showing off on their beds.

Gus, now 73, has been a leading figure in contemporary dance since the early 1970s, when he founded the Gus Solomons Company/Dance after years of performing in the companies of Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Pearl Lang and Donald McKayle. Among his many credits, he created the title role in Donald Byrd’s The Harlem Nutcracker, is an Arts Professor at NYU/Tisch School of the Arts, and writes about dance for several prominent arts publications. Mr. Solomons won the prestigious Bessie award for sustained achievement in choreography in 2000.

Larry Keigwin conceived “Mattress Suite” after watching dancer Nicole Wolcott jump around playfully on her bed.  Together they developed choreography inspired by Wolcott’s moves and set it to popular songs and classical music.  The piece debuted in 2003 at New York’s Joyce Theater and was a hit with critics and audiences.
